Hiking in Slovakia — what you need to know

4 things you need to know before
hiking in Slovakia

Slovakia is a total paradise for hikers! The High Tatras mountains are full of jaw-dropping hiking trails — think crystal-clear mountain lakes, waterfalls, and epic viewpoints everywhere. Honestly, it reminded us a bit of the Dolomites, just way less crowded.

But before you grab your hiking boots and hit the trails, there are a few things you need to know about hiking in Slovakia.

No time to read?

1. Hiking paths in the High Tatras — a planner’s nightmare

As Germans, we’re used to planning our hikes down to the last meter. Google the route, check the altitude, the distance… all online. Easy, right? Not in the High Tatras.

We couldn’t find a proper map anywhere — not even on the official park website. When I emailed them, their answer was basically: “Come here, buy the map at one of our info centers. No online version.” Great. Thanks.

Our hiking app also had way fewer routes than we hoped, and most blogs only listed one-way hikes. So if you love planning every step like we do, be prepared: hiking in the High Tatras requires a bit of improvisation and flexibility.

2. Difficulty levels — “medium” is a tricky word

Normally, on a casual day hike, we pick medium difficulty trails. Easy peasy. In Slovakia? Medium basically means HARD.

Many Slovakia hiking trails are super rocky, steep, and require serious balance and fitness. You’ll need to watch every step — one slip could mean a tumble. So don’t underestimate those “moderate hikes” in the High Tatras!

3. Safety… or the lack of it

Safety in Slovakia is… different. Let’s just say it keeps you on your toes.

We tried a hike in Slovak Paradise National Park, through the Suchá Belá Gorge. Every travel guide online called it “family-friendly, medium difficulty, really beautiful.”

HAHA… yeah, right.

At the entrance, there’s staff and you pay €4 — that’s it. No signs, no warnings, nothing. The hike starts peaceful: little wooden bridges, beautiful forest, massive gorge. And then BAM — a 20-meter vertical ladder appears. No way around, no way back. Just UP. And after that? Ladder after ladder, slippery steps, waterfalls rushing right next to you.

Apparently, lots of Slovaks do this hike at school. We were shook. We’ve never been that concerned for our safety in our lives. Usually, hikes like this come with a via ferrata system. Not here. Slovakian kids are apparently just… built different.

So, if you plan to hike in Suchá Belá Gorge, stay sharp and maybe don’t underestimate the “medium” rating.

4. Bears in the High Tatras

Rare, but it happens: brown bear encounters in the High Tatras.

Do your homework on what to do if you meet one, and consider carrying bear spray. And if you’re camping, never leave food outside or in your tent. Bears are cool, but not that cool.

Bonus tips for hiking in Slovakia

  • Pick up a paper map at an info center.
  • Check weather forecasts — conditions change fast in the mountains.
  • Bring snacks, water, and bear spray if camping.
  • Wear sturdy shoes — many trails are slippery and rocky.
