🌟 Top Towns & Must-See Stops Around Lake Como

🏙️ Varenna — Romantic & Photogenic

Varenna is often considered one of the most scenic towns on Lake Como — pastel hilltop houses, a lakeside promenade and charming cafes create a postcard-perfect vibe. Don’t miss the Villa Monastero gardens and the scenic waterfront walk.

Best For: Romantic strolls, photos, relaxing meals with lake views.

🏞️ Bellagio — The “Pearl” of Lake Como

Bellagio sits at the fork of the lake’s three branches and offers panoramic views, steep cobblestone streets and elegant villas. Visit Villa Melzi gardens, explore narrow alleys full of shops and cafes, and watch the sunset from Punta Spartivento.

Tip: Go early or visit quieter spots away from the main ferry dock to avoid crowds.

🌅 Gravedona — Quiet & Authentic

A lesser-known town with beautiful sunsets and more relaxed vibes than the most touristy spots. It’s perfect for travelers who want lake views without the crowds.

Best For: Sunset walks, local wine, quieter evenings.

🌿 Tremezzo — Luxury & Gardens

Tremezzo’s highlight is Villa Carlotta with its lush gardens and fine art. The area feels a bit more refined and offers stunning views of both lake and mountains.

Best For: Culture, gardens, scenic viewpoints.

🚶 Bonus Stop: Lierna Castle

Not mentioned enough but definitely worth a visit — the medieval Castello di Lierna, perched on a peninsula, tells centuries of history and offers great views of the lake.

How to Get Around Lake Como

🛳️ Ferries & Boats

The most scenic way to explore is by ferry. Regular ferries connect towns like Como, Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio, and you can buy tickets at jetties. Public ferries are cheaper, while hydrofoils are faster but more expensive.

Pro tip: Buy tickets early to avoid queues, especially in peak season.

🚗 Driving & Parking

If you rent a car, plan ahead — parking can be tricky in narrow town centers. Public garages and designated zones exist, but many travelers prefer staying where ferry connections are easy.

🚆 By Train

You can reach the eastern side of Lake Como easily by train (e.g., to Varenna). The western side and Bellagio rely more on buses and boats for connections.

How to save money at your trip to Lake Como

Accommodation:

We experienced that Air BnBs around Lake Como are often cheaper than hotels. Also, you should stay in a lesser-known town like Gravedona to save some money for accommodation.

Check tourist taxes in your accommodation — these vary by season.

Restaurants:

We know, lake views are amazing! But don’t eat in Restaurants at touristy places that offer you a lake view. It’s by far way more expensive than in many other restaurants, and also they charge you with the servizio extra for the view.

Try to go more off the main streets, in a lesser-known town or somewhere where no tourists are – we promise you: you pay much less and get the best and authentic Italian food. Btw: never pay more than €7 for a Spritz!
